What can we do for World Environment Day? 10 everyday Lifestyle changes to help our Planet

As a company that is passionate about helping our environment, we have put together 10 simple things you can start doing today to make a difference to help save Mother Earth, your loved ones and yourself.

1. Use a reusable shopping bag

For the environment: Plastic bag pollution and the detrimental effect plastic has on the environment has been well publicised. Although reusable shopping bags may cost a little more upfront, there are many benefits for our environment and yourself! Using a recyclable shopping bag means less manufacturing of plastic, which means reduced plastic in the environment, helping us to improve our chances of limiting global warming.

For you: The reusable and eco-friendly bags provide you with a much sturdier solution than the old plastic bag. In addition to this, many stores have introduced shopping incentives such as discounts or points if you shop with a reusable bag; small savings can add up to a lot over time.

2. Walk or bike to get around

For the environment: By walking or cycling to move around for our shorter journeys we help create less air pollution, greenhouse gases and fewer emissions. These all contribute to global warming. Communities that walk or bike more have the potential to create a quieter environment with less traffic noise, cleaner air, happier surroundings, protecting the living environment and natural resources.

For you: Lowering your transport costs and therefore saving money. Walking and cycling are a great way to exercise which helps lift your mood, improve your general health, wellbeing and quality of life.

3. Shop local and sustainable

For the environment: One of the main reasons you should consider shopping locally is that is reduces your enviromental impact. Produce from your local shop is likely to come from local farms which means you are lowering the cost of transport and food is able to be kept cool and fresher for longer, as they make their way to local stores.

For you: Feel good knowing you are reducing your carbon footprint and you are contributing to the positive impact on your local economy and community, together with creating jobs opportunities.

4. Plant a Tree

For the environment: Planting a tree is a simple thing that everyone can do to help reduce greenhouse gases that contribute to climate change. Trees offer multiple natural benefits to help protect the environment, such as help cleaning the air around us, together with providing food source to the birds and bees! No matter where you live, you can plant a tree. If you have a small space in your garden you could plant a tree in the ground or in a planter if you have a patio. If you don’t have either of these spaces, there are Environmental Conservation Organization’s focused on tree planting, reforestation and carbon reduction projects, who will plant a tree for you or enable you to get involved (we have listed and linked a few below).

5. Upcycle, giveaway or sell old items

For the environment: There are many enviromental benefits to upcycling, giving away or selling your old items; it minimises the volume of waste and discarded materials being sent into landfill every year, reduces manufacturing with new materials and pollution is significantly lowered.

For you: Aside from knowing you are contributing to a reduction in air and water pollution and greenhouse gases, there are also personal benefits from upcycling old items and giving them a new lease of life and potentially creating something that is completely unique. Know your item is being enjoyed by someone in its new home, whilst maybe earning some money for the item you no longer wanted. As they say, “Someone's trash can be the next persons treasure.”

6. Meal plan to reduce food waste

For the environment: Taking some time to plan your meals and creating a shopping list is one of the most effective ways to reduce food waste. Most people don’t realise how much food they throw away and the tons of leftovers or spoiled produce that end up in landfills. By managing food sustainability we also lower our carbon footprint, as this results in fewer trips to the super market.

For you: Saving money as you will be buying less produce and reducing impulse spending. Any leftovers can be used more efficiently - supporting your community by donating to your local charities any untouched food that would’ve gone to waste or donating to food banks to help those who in the community don’t have enough to eat.

7. Use eco-friendly products

For the environment: Going green with your product purchases, plays a huge role in the reduction of pollution causing the climate to change. Many companies are joining this huge movement to make their products sustainable and eco-friendly and today more and more people care about the ethos of the company they buy from. When shopping for a sustainable home, there are a few things you need to look out for: how is the sustainable product made, how is it packaged and how long does the sustainable product last. When it comes time to replacing an item, this is when you can make a conscious switch.

For you: Knowing you’re playing a part just by making simple swaps gives you a nice feeling that you’re making a positive contribution to the global enviromental movement to protect our planet.

8. Reduce energy consumption

For the environment: Saving energy reduces pollution. When you reduce the power you use, you reduce the number of toxic fumes that are being released into the air, which results in conserving the earth’s natural resources, creating a healthier living environment. Simple steps you can take to reduce your energy intake and contribute to a healthier world is by saving water and electricity: turn off unnecessary lights, take shorter showers, turn water off when brushing teeth, run full load of washing, unplug devices and use long-lasting light bulbs. These are all simple no-cost ways to reduce energy consumption that you can start doing today.

For you: Knowing you are helping the planet and also putting money in your pocket.

9. Get familiar with your local recycling community

For the environment: One of the most talked about actions you will have seen or heard in the eco-friendly movement is recycling! If we Reduce, Reuse and Recycle we are able to save resources by converting old products and waste into new items, helping keep waste out of landfills. Becoming familiar with your areas recycling centre can benefit your community’s environment and you are able to dispose of your items easily.

For you: Some items you can recycle from the comfort of your home – most Councils provide bins to separate general waste from recyclable goods. Simply call your council and request your bin or use the easy link below.

10. Ditch single use plastic

For the environment: Production of plastic is a huge problem to our planet, as it is has a devastating impact on our oceans, wildlife and our health. It is a material that doesn’t break down, it just breaks up and ends up in water, eaten by wildlife and inside our bodies. Some ways you can ditch plastic is by using a reusable shopping bag, buy in bulk to avoid single use packaged goods, use a metal or bamboo straw and take a reusable cup to your local coffee shop. If there is a company that makes your favourite products, let them know that you care about the packaging, ask them to switch to something more recyclable, compostable and/or renewable.

For you: Know you are making a change for good in your everyday routine and challenging companies to improve their ethos, becoming you are choosing EARTH!
